Healthy buildings rarely fail for a single reason. Poor air, overheating, and the spread of infection are all connected — and they play out at every scale. Few researchers work fluently across that whole range. Professor Zhiwen (Vincent) Luo, Chair in Architectural and Urban Science at Cardiff's Welsh School of Architecture, is one of them.
One question, two scales
Running through Vincent's research is a deceptively simple question: how do we keep people healthy indoors without spending more energy than we can afford? He pursues it at two scales simultaneously.
Finding the sweet spot between ventilation, health benefit and energy cost. Bringing fresh air in is one of our most powerful tools against airborne disease — but heating or cooling that air is expensive. Getting the balance right is a genuine engineering problem.
A multi-scale modelling platform that connects people, buildings and whole cities to study heatwave resilience. In dense megacities like Hong Kong and London, he has shown how lifting buildings, varying heights and opening wind paths helps cities breathe — cutting both heat stress and pollution exposure.
Research that shaped WHO guidance
Vincent's work on how ventilation patterns influenced influenza spread in a Hong Kong hospital ward fed directly into the World Health Organization's guidance on natural ventilation for infection control in healthcare settings. Evidence from a model that changed how real buildings are run.
